Would you travel abroad for surgery?
Thousands of people from the UK travel abroad for cosmetic surgery every year. However, there are many potential pitfalls when travelling abroad for surgery. For example, it is hard to assess the standard of the surgeon or the clinic in which he operates. In addition, what are the backup facilities if something should go wrong. Who will pay for them? And for the bigger operations, is it really a good idea to fly directly after having major surgery?
There is no specific travel insurance currently available for patients going abroad for planned surgery, which means that you could be left high and dry should something go wrong. Fortunately, disaster stories of botched surgery abroad are limited, and many patients are delighted with the results, appreciating the opportunity to combine surgery with a holiday. However, some members of the British Association of Aestheric Plastic Surgeons (BAAPS) have doubts about the quality of some of the procedures offered abroad, and in the worst cases botched operations have been left for the NHS to correct.
